FAQ

Widen for iPhone Duo

Devices and browsers

Which phone models does it work on?

The iPhone Duo, on its outer display, when the phone is closed. That’s the only display where Safari puts its buttons in a column down the side. On the inner display, Widen leaves pages alone, and on other iPhone models it has nothing to do.

Which browsers does it work in?

Safari. Widen is a Safari extension, and other browsers on iPhone can’t run Safari extensions.

Using it

Isn’t this what Request Desktop Website does?

No. Request Desktop Website swaps a phone layout for the computer version and shrinks it to fit, so the text gets tiny. Widen keeps the phone layout at its normal size and gives it more room.

Does Widen help sites that only have a desktop layout?

Yes, if you ask. Those sites are left alone at first. Set one to Pictures or All and tick Widen its desktop layout too: Widen fits the page to the display, then stretches it across the full width like any other.

Does any text end up behind Safari’s buttons?

Not in the standard Pictures mode: text runs up to the buttons and stops, and only pictures, tables and backgrounds go behind them. If you’d rather have every line full width, choose Pictures & text. Site headers and menus stay clear of the camera either way.

What are Off, Pictures and Pictures & text?

Off leaves Safari as usual. Pictures lets photos, backgrounds and tables use the full width, with text stopping at Safari’s buttons. Pictures & text lets text run under the buttons too. You can choose one for every site, and a different one for particular sites.

Will it work on the sites I read?

On almost all of them. A few sites size themselves in ways Widen can’t reach yet, or come only in a desktop layout, which Widen leaves alone unless you ask. If a site doesn’t look right, set it to Off in Widen’s panel and tell us which one; we’ll try to fix it.

Can I keep one site the way it was?

Yes. Open Widen’s panel on that site and set it to Off. Or do the reverse: leave Widen off and set the few sites you read most to Pictures or All. The panel lists every site you’ve set, with a Remove button.

Can Siri or a shortcut switch it?

Yes. Say “Toggle Widen” to Siri to flip between Off and Pictures, or “Set Widen” to pick a mode. In the Shortcuts app, the same Set Widen and Toggle Widen actions work in automations and on the Action button. Open pages follow the new setting straight away.

How do I get Safari’s normal layout back?

Choose Off in Widen’s panel in Safari. To remove it altogether, turn off Allow Extension in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions › Widen, or delete the app.

Privacy

Why does Widen need access to all websites?

It has to adjust each page’s layout as it loads. It doesn’t keep or send anything: no analytics, and no network requests of its own. The privacy policy is short.

Price

When does the free week start?

On the day you first turn Widen on in Safari. Downloading the app and setting it up don’t use any of it.

My free week is over. Now what?

Pages go back to how Safari lays them out, and your settings wait for you. Buy Widen in the app whenever you like and everything picks up where it was.

Is it a subscription?

No. At our launch price it’s US$3.99 for lifetime access, paid once. Outside the US, the App Store sets the equivalent price in your currency.

I have a second iPhone Duo. Do I pay again?

No. Open the Widen app on the other Duo, signed in with the same Apple Account, and restore your purchase.
